Introduction
Nowadays, everyone knows how to install a windows on a system. But still you can’t format your machine everyday. It will be frustrating for an Oracle DBA who is doing an installation and by mistakenly did some changes in system files and made
System Requirement
We will require at least following system configuration –
- 3 GB RAM or more
- 3 core cpu or more
- 20GB or more Free HDD space available in other then System Drive ( C: for most of the system)
Software Requirements
We will require following requirements fulfilled –
- ISO image of linux , You can google it, there are lots of ways to download a ISO image of any flavor of Linux. ( Here we are using Redhat Linux)
- Virtual Box Software installed on your system. Download it from here –> https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
Error with Current Version of Virtual Box and solution for it
When you are trying to start the Virtual Machine, you might get error as follows->
Failed to Open a Session for Virtual Machine <machine-name>. It will not allow you to start the machine. We have solution for it as well.
You can start the machine with 3 type to start a virtual machine session.
1. Normal Start
2.Headless Start
3.Detachable Start
We have tried with other two option and it worked for us. Let me show you how –
Click on Arrow Next to Start Button and chose Headless Start or Detachable Start
Step by Step Procedure on “How to Install Linux on Oracle Virtual Box”
Once you install the Oracle Virtual Box on your PC ,open the application, you will see the interface as follows –
Now click on Add (the green button, you will have a new pop up). Please put Name ( it can be anything, here we put oracledbworld, Location of Virtual Machine ( This drive should have at least 20 GB ), Chose type of system you are going to install. Here we are installing Linux hence we chose Linux in TYPE and Version – is type of linux you want to install. Here I had Red-hat ISO with me, hence I installed the same. And click on Next
Here we have to allocate memory to the Virtual Machine we are creating at the moment. For me it is giving an option from 4MB to 8Gb since I have 8GB RAM on my system. I created Virtual Machine with 1GB. Click on NEXT
Please note you have to keep at least 2GB available on the PC. So you have max allocate 6GB if you have 8GB RAM on your PC.
Next is Harddisk. Here we get 3 options, Chose “Create a virtual hard disk now”. And click create.
Type of Hard Disk File Type – VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image). And Click Next
Here you can chose How Space will be allocated. If you chose Dynamically then it will allocate depending upon the usage, If you chose Fixed size then whatever we say straightaway that much of size will get allocated. We chose – Dynamically Allocated and Click Next
Here You need to chose the size of the Hard disk you want to allocate for Virtual Machine and file location. And press Create
Once you click Create, you will see the virtual Machine name on left hand side. For us it was “oracledbworld” Now click that Virtual Machine.
Left side of Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager, you will see all the machine you create just below Tools
Now it’s time to pass the ISO file. Right Click on Virtual Machine for me it was oracledbworld click on settings, chose Storage Under Controller IDE, pass the location of the ISO. For me it was in E:\Oracle\Oracle Database11g DB\redhat6.iso and Click OK
Now select the virtual machine on left, for me it was oracledbworld and then click detachable start
Once machine gets started, From Here Linux Installation starts. Click on
Install or upgrade an existing system.
Usually in this step, system does check for media test, we can skip it because we are using ISO file. So we chose SKIP
Click on Next
Here it will ask for Language –> I chose English and click Next
Chose U.S English and Click Next
Chose Basic Storage Devices and click Next
Click on Yes,discard any data and click on Next
Give a hostname, It’s like naming your machine. And click Next
Chose the Time Zone and Click Next
Enter the password for Root ( It is a super user) and Click Next
Chose Use All Space and Press Next
Here is the trick, usually we all go with basic server option. But here we will chose customize now
Now We selected all options under Desktops,Databases,system management and Servers and Click Next
Let system install the packages for you. ( Best thing is you don’t have to worry if you miss anything, we can install them later as well)
Once installation is completed, it will reboot. Click on Reboot to proceed.
Once reboot is completed, it will ask for Basic Details. Click Forward
Chose Yes, I agree to the License Agreement and Click Forward
Chose No, I prefer to register at a later time and Click Forward
Click on Register Later
Click Forward
You can chose to create another user here , or you can skip it. Click on Forward
Set the Date and Time ( if it is not proper) And Click Forward
Click on Finish
Once system is rebooted. it will be ready to use.
